Exercise: Sharpening Our Mental Blueprint

Now our mental blueprint is in place, we’re almost ready to go. But first, let’s check that we have the technique down cold by doing the following exercise on a blank piece of paper.

•Choose a particular performance situation you find uncomfortable. At the very top of the page write PRESSURE and beneath it name the situation and write down three words or phrases that describe the pressure involved.

•Underneath that, draw a line across the page. Write INTENT above the line, and below it write down three words or phrases that describe what people observing you would actually see and feel if you were performing at the next level up in that situation.

•Draw a second line across the bottom third of the page, write REALITY above it, and below it write down three words or phrases that describe what is currently working well in this situation. (The lines create a visual gap, which boosts your BLUE brain power.) Then put a + next to them. Now write down three words or phrases that describe what is holding you back. Put a – next to them.

•Now draw a mental blueprint triangle in the middle of the gap between INTENT and REALITY, and label the corners MINDSET, STRUCTURES and SKILLSET. Below each label, write down one action you could take that would help you bridge your performance gap.

•Once you’ve completed this process, you’ve created a performance gap and then upgraded your mental blueprint to bridge the gap for that uncomfortable situation.

If we’re able to work through the exercise without having to refer back to the material earlier in the chapter, we’re ready to use the mental blueprint technique to form plans of action that will work and stick: we are primed to perform under pressure.
